The No-Fuss Feeding Guide for New Adopters

By Dr. Lena Marsh, Kennel Vet · Updated August 2026

A bowl of balanced dry dog food ready to serve

Pet food aisles are designed to confuse you. Strip away the marketing and feeding well comes down to three things: the right amount, a steady schedule, and a slow transition from whatever they ate before.

Start with the kennel recipe

Your adopter pack lists exactly what your pet ate with us. Keep it identical for two weeks — a new home is already a big change without adding a new menu. Then mix the new food in over seven days, a little more each meal.

Three label tricks that matter

  • Named protein first: look for "chicken" or "salmon", not "meat derivatives".
  • Feed by weight, not by scoop: weigh portions for the first month until your eye learns.
  • Treats count: training snacks should stay under a tenth of daily calories.

When to call the vet

Skipped one meal? Normal during settling in. Refused food for 24 hours (cats) or 48 hours (dogs), vomiting more than twice, or sudden bloating — call us or your vet the same day.
