Bringing a rescue home is joyful — and, for the animal, a little overwhelming. New smells, new sounds, new rules. The good news: with a calm first 72 hours, most pets unfold faster than you'd expect. Here's the routine we teach every adopter.
Day one: one room is enough
Set up a single quiet room with water, a bed, and a safe hiding spot before your pet arrives. Let them explore that room first. Sit on the floor, read a book, and let curiosity do the introductions — chasing affection on day one usually backfires.
Day two: build the rhythm
Feed at the same times we fed at the kennel, walk the same route twice, and keep visitors away for now. Predictability is a love language for anxious animals. Short training sessions with treats teach them that good things happen around you.
- Keep the same food for the first two weeks, then transition slowly.
- Use a long leash in open spaces until recall is reliable.
- Reward calm behaviour — lying quietly, checking in, settling on the bed.
Day three and beyond: open the world slowly
Add one new room, one new walking route, and one new person at a time. Most of our graduates show their true personality between week two and week six — the patience you invest now pays back for years.
If anything worries you — appetite, hiding, housetraining — message us. Every adoption includes six months of free support, and no question is too small.
